Beloved Gorilla Delilah, Star of Animal Magic, Passes Away at Belfast Zoo

One of the oldest gorillas in the world, Delilah, has sadly passed away at Belfast Zoo on Wednesday. This heartbreaking news comes just months after the zoo celebrated her 60th birthday. Delilah had been a cherished resident of the zoo for an impressive 32 years.

A Life Full of Love and Admiration

Delilah was no ordinary gorilla. She captured the hearts of both keepers and visitors alike during her time at Belfast Zoo. Her endearing personality made her a beloved character among the staff and a delight to all who had the pleasure of meeting her. Delilah’s presence on the popular show Animal Magic, alongside Johnny Morris, further endeared her to the nation, drawing attention to the Western Lowland Gorilla and educating the public about this remarkable species.

Throughout her later years, Delilah required a specialized diet and received daily medication, which was administered with baby porridge each morning. The dedicated veterinary team at Belfast Zoo ensured that any health issues were promptly addressed, working closely with the keepers to provide the best possible care for Delilah.

A Life Well-Lived

Despite facing challenges in her later years, Delilah’s keepers were determined to maintain her activity levels. They provided her with enrichment activities and encouraged interactions with other gorillas, ensuring she remained physically fit and active. This commitment played a crucial role in enabling Delilah to enjoy a long and happy life within her family group.

However, recently, Delilah suffered from a chest infection, and the difficult decision was made to put her to sleep to prevent further deterioration of her condition. The announcement of her passing brought deep sadness to the entire team at Belfast Zoo, who had grown to love and cherish Delilah during her remarkable 32 years with them.

A Favourite Among Visitors

Delilah’s charm extended beyond the zoo staff. Visitors from all over delighted in watching her playful interactions with the younger gorillas. Her adventurous spirit often led her to scale the highest point of the climbing frame, surprising and entertaining those who had the privilege of witnessing her antics.

Delilah arrived at Belfast Zoo in 1992 and was part of the first gorilla group established there. Her presence and unique personality left an indelible mark on the zoo’s history and the hearts of those who encountered her.

A Species in Danger

It is important to note that Western Lowland Gorillas, like Delilah, are critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The loss of each individual of this remarkable species is a reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect their future.

Julie Mansell, the zoo curator, shared her fond memories of Delilah, describing her as a character who had been a cherished member of the Belfast Zoo family for many years. Delilah’s mischievous nature and her ability to keep the younger gorillas in line endeared her to the staff, despite occasional grumpy moments.

As we bid farewell to Delilah, we mourn the loss of a truly extraordinary gorilla. Her remarkable life and the joy she brought to so many will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
