McHenry County philanthropist, business leader, MCC patron Charles Liebman dies at 102

Charles Liebman, a prominent figure in McHenry County known for his philanthropy and business leadership, has passed away at the age of 102. Liebman was a highly respected member of the community and played a significant role in various organizations, including McHenry County College and The Community Foundation for McHenry County.

The Community Foundation for McHenry County

In 2001, Liebman founded The Community Foundation for McHenry County, an organization dedicated to keeping donation dollars within the county. His vision for the foundation was to create an “everlasting force for good in McHenry County.” Amy Hernon, the Executive Director of The Community Foundation, described Liebman as a “philanthropic visionary” who understood the importance of making a lasting impact.

Philanthropic Work and Contributions

Liebman’s philanthropic efforts extended beyond The Community Foundation. He and his late wife, Mary, generously supported Crystal Lake-based McHenry County College, donating a collection of over 260 art prints and drawings. They also played a crucial role in establishing a nursing program at the college.

Liebman’s interest in healthcare and education was further demonstrated through his involvement with the Family Health Partnership Clinic. He helped create a nurse practitioner training program at the clinic and established a fund for its operations. Suzanne Hoban, the Executive Director of the Family Health Partnership Clinic, described Liebman as her mentor and praised his intelligence and curiosity in various fields.

Liebman’s dedication to education was evident in his contributions to McHenry County College. In 2018, he donated $5 million for the construction of the state-of-the-art Liebman Science Center. His most recent contribution was towards MCC’s University Center. Clinton Gabbard, the President of McHenry County College, emphasized Liebman’s belief in the potential of individuals to do more and his immense generosity.

A Life of Achievement

Apart from his philanthropic endeavors, Liebman had a successful career as the president and CEO of Coilcraft, an electronics manufacturer based in Cary. He played a pivotal role in the company’s growth and international presence.

Liebman also served as the first village president of Bull Valley after its incorporation in 1977. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Liebman and his wife, Mary, raised four children in Bull Valley, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Liebman’s passing is a great loss to the McHenry County community. His impact as a philanthropist, business leader, and mentor cannot be overstated. His contributions to education, healthcare, and various organizations have left a lasting legacy in McHenry County.

Suzanne Hoban expressed the sentiment shared by many in the community, stating, “Our community is so much richer in so many ways because of Chuck. He will never know how widespread his impact was.”
