Hayden Darwin Center Sr. Passes Away at 87
Montgomery, AL – Hayden Darwin Center Sr., a beloved former minister at Montgomery Church, passed away on January 17 at the age of 87. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Center had a remarkable career in ministry and made a significant impact on the communities he served.
A Life Committed to Faith and Service
Hayden Darwin Center Sr.’s journey in ministry began after he graduated from Belmont University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History. He furthered his education at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he obtained his Master of Divinity degree. Later, he pursued a Doctor of Ministry degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Throughout his life, Center dedicated himself to serving congregations in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. For 16 years, he served as the pastor of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, leaving a lasting impact on the community. In recognition of his leadership and contributions, Center was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Baptist Health.
Beyond his local impact, Center was also the President of the Center for Meta Church Missions. This organization worked to establish and develop ministries in various locations, including the United States, Europe, Mexico, and Central and South America.
A Loving Family Left Behind
Hayden Darwin Center Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joyce Sands Center, and their three children: Hayden Center Jr., Carlton Center, and Mark Center. His legacy also lives on through his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Celebrating a Life Well-Lived
A memorial service to honor the life of Hayden Darwin Center Sr. will be held on Saturday, February 3, at Heritage Baptist Church located at 1849 Perry Hill Road in Montgomery. The service will begin at 3 p.m., following a viewing from 2 to 3 p.m. All friends, family, and community members are welcome to attend and pay their respects to this remarkable individual.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Respite Ministry at First United Methodist Church. This ministry provides support and care for individuals and families in need, reflecting the values that Hayden Darwin Center Sr. held dear throughout his life.
