McHenry County Philanthropist and Business Leader Charles Liebman Dies at 102
Longtime McHenry County philanthropist and business leader, Charles Liebman, passed away at the age of 102. Liebman, who was Bull Valley’s first village president, had a significant impact on the community through his philanthropic work.
A Philanthropic Visionary
Liebman founded The Community Foundation for McHenry County in 2001, with the aim of keeping donation dollars within the county. His vision was to create an “everlasting force for good in McHenry County,” according to Executive Director Amy Hernon. Liebman believed that making a lasting difference required more than just dropping a few coins in the kettle.
An Outstanding Philanthropist
Liebman’s philanthropic efforts extended beyond The Community Foundation. He and his late wife, Mary, worked extensively with Crystal Lake-based McHenry County College (MCC). They donated a collection of over 260 art prints and drawings to MCC and played a vital role in establishing a nursing program at the college.
Liebman’s interest in healthcare and education also led to the creation of a nurse practitioner training program at the Family Health Partnership Clinic. He generously set up a fund for the clinic through The Community Foundation, demonstrating his commitment to supporting vital community healthcare services.
A Lifelong Commitment
Liebman’s contributions to MCC were not limited to art and nursing programs. In 2018, he made a $5 million donation to MCC for the construction of a state-of-the-art science center, which was named the Liebman Science Center in his honor. He also recently contributed to MCC’s University Center, leaving a lasting legacy of support for education in McHenry County.

In addition to his philanthropic endeavors, Liebman served as the president and CEO of Cary-based electronics manufacturer Coilcraft. The company, founded in 1945, manufactures, engineers, and distributes magnetic components on an international scale.
Liebman’s leadership extended to the community as well. He served as Bull Valley’s first village president after its incorporation in 1977. His dedication to public service and his commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others will be remembered and cherished.
