Charles Osgood, Veteran CBS Newsman and Longtime Host of Sunday Morning, Dies at 91

Renowned television and radio journalist Charles Osgood, who captivated audiences as the anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning” and the radio program “The Osgood File,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91, according to his family members.

Osgood’s family revealed that he succumbed to dementia at his residence in New Jersey, as reported by CBS News.

“Charlie absolutely loved being part of the ‘Sunday Morning’ community. We’ll miss him terribly, but there is comfort in knowing his life was charmed, in large part thanks to you,” the family stated in a heartfelt message shared with the news network. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for welcoming him into your homes on Sundays to share stories and to highlight the better parts of humanity. He’ll see you on the radio.”

For over two decades, from 1994 until his retirement in 2016, Osgood served as the anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning,” a role that earned him three Daytime Emmy awards for outstanding morning program. Even at the age of 84, when he decided to retire, Osgood expressed his profound joy in his work, saying, “it’s been such a joy doing it!” according to CBS News.

Reflecting on his time as the host of the popular show, Osgood stated, “Who wouldn’t want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together?”

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the field of journalism, Osgood was honored with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ News & Documentary Emmy Award for lifetime achievement in 2017. Former NATAS president and CEO Bob Mauro praised Osgood’s unique qualities, stating, “Osgood’s character put you at ease, while his wit and humanity drew you in whether reflecting on stories large or small.”

Following his retirement from television, Osgood continued to engage audiences through his work in radio. His signature sign-off, “See you on the radio,” became synonymous with his name, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.

In 1991, Osgood spoke about the appeal of radio, saying, “Television is wonderful and I don’t mean to take anything from it, but the fact is that a TV picture is very literally ‘what you see is what you get.’ You bring your own experience and emotions to radio that you don’t to television. I do think that radio is more visual. It’s a paradox, but it’s true.”

During the peak of his radio career, Osgood reached over 11 million listeners each week, further cementing his status as a beloved and respected voice in the industry.

Born on January 8, 1933, in New York City, Osgood joined CBS News in September 1971 after working at WCBS News Radio 88 in New York and other notable news organizations such as ABC News, WHCT, and WGMS, according to the Radio Hall of Fame. His exceptional contributions to radio led to his induction into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1990.

In addition to his broadcasting career, Osgood was also an accomplished writer, having published six books throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean Crafton, five children, a sister, and a brother.

Charles Osgood’s passing marks the end of an era in journalism, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, warmth, and humanity that will be cherished and remembered by audiences around the world.
