Dexter Scott King, Son of Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King Jr., Passes Away at 62
Dexter Scott King, the younger son of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., has sadly passed away at the age of 62. He peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in Malibu, California, according to his wife, Leah Weber King. Dexter’s battle with a terrible disease, which he fought with bravery and might, came to an end on Monday (Jan 22).
Cause of Dexter Scott King’s Death Revealed
The King Center in Atlanta has revealed that Dexter Scott King died from prostate cancer. Born on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta, he was named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father began his pastoral work.
Tragedy struck Dexter at a young age when his father was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. Reverend Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center, expressed her heartbreak over losing another sibling and requested prayers for strength during this difficult time.
Dexter Scott King: Continuing His Father’s Legacy
Following in his father’s footsteps, Dexter attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He later pursued a career in law, using his expertise to protect the intellectual property of the King family. Known for his striking resemblance to his father, Dexter portrayed him in the 2002 movie “The Rosa Parks Story,” as acknowledged by the King Center in Atlanta.
Preceded in death by his parents and sister Yolanda in 2006 and 2007, respectively, Dexter is survived by his wife of 11 years, Leah Weber King, his sister Bernice King, his brother Martin Luther King III, his niece Yolanda Renee King, and other relatives.
Reverend Al Sharpton, founder and president of the civil rights organization the National Action Network, expressed his deep sadness upon hearing the news of Dexter’s passing. He highlighted how Dexter transformed his pain into activism, dedicating his life to advancing the dreams his parents had for their children and future generations.
