A Life Steeped in Music

Born Marlina Burgess on September 22, 1939, in New Rochelle, New York, Marlena Shaw’s love for music was nurtured by her uncle, Jimmy Burgess, who was a jazz trumpeter. Taking on the stage name Marlena Shaw, she became renowned for her soulful rendition of “California Soul,” a song written by Ashford & Simpson. Released in 1969 on Cadet Records, a subsidiary of Chess Records, the track became one of her most recognizable hits.

Shaw’s talent and unique voice also shone through in her albums, such as From different bags (1967) and The spice of life (1969). The latter album featured the widely-sampled songs “California Soul” and “Woman of the Ghetto.” Over the years, “California Soul” has been sampled by various artists, including Gang Starr, Stereo MC, and even received a remix by Diplo in 2008. The track’s popularity was further enhanced by its use in commercials for Dodge, KFC, and Longshoremen.

When asked about her music being sampled, Shaw expressed her delight in hearing other artists’ interpretations. She found it exciting and compared herself to the sun, shining on various creative endeavors.

Shaw’s musical journey extended beyond Cadet Records, with recordings on Blue Note Records, Columbia, and Verve. In 1987, her album It Is Love: Recorded Live at Vine St. played a significant role in relaunching the Verve label. Verve, in a statement, expressed their sadness over Shaw’s passing and acknowledged the enduring popularity of her music.

A Lifeline in Live Performances

For Shaw, live performances were a source of salvation. She reveled in the opportunity to connect with audiences and perform with both big and small bands. She cherished the experience and had been consistently working in live shows throughout her career.
