Marlena Shaw, Jazz and Soul Singer, Passes Away at 81
Marlena Shaw, the renowned jazz and soul singer who gained fame with her iconic 1969 recording of “California Soul,” has passed away at the age of 81.
The sad news was confirmed by Shaw’s daughter, Marla Bradshaw, in a heartfelt video posted on Facebook on Friday (Jan. 19).
“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved mother, the cherished icon and artist, Marlena Shaw, today at 12:03,” Bradshaw shared.
“She passed away peacefully, and we, as a family, were at peace. Just yesterday, you may have seen posts celebrating her birthday, and my twin sister and I are grateful that she was here to join in the celebration.”
Bradshaw also revealed that her mother “went listening to some of her favorite songs” and expressed her belief that Shaw is now at peace in heaven.
Born Marlina Burgess on September 22, 1939, in New Rochelle, New York, Marlena Shaw credited her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a jazz trumpet player, for sparking her interest in music.
