Remembering Brent Sikkema: A Pioneer in the Art World

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Brent Sikkema, a prominent figure in the art world. Known for his keen eye and unwavering support for artists, Sikkema leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.

A Journey Filled with Passion and Dedication

Sikkema’s journey in the art industry began in 1991 when he joined forces with Michael Jenkins. Their collaboration flourished, and Sikkema eventually became the gallery director in 1996, solidifying his position as an influential figure. In 2003, he took on a partner role, and in 2005, Meg Malloy joined as another partner, further expanding the gallery’s reach and influence.

A Platform for Exceptional Talent

Throughout his career, Sikkema represented a wide array of talented artists. Notable names include Ms. Sillman, Mark Bradford, Wangechi Mutu, Deana Lawson, and Arlene Shechet. His keen eye for unique and thought-provoking artwork allowed these artists to shine and gain recognition in the art world.

Embracing Change and Embracing Multiculturalism

In 1999, Sikkema made a bold move by relocating from SoHo to Chelsea, an industrial district that was still in its early stages of transformation. This decision showcased his forward-thinking mindset and willingness to embrace change. The move allowed him to exhibit groundbreaking works, including glass sculptures by Josiah McElheny, photographs by Tim Davis, and the mystical drawings of outsider artist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré.

Sikkema’s exhibitions were not limited to a single style or culture. He curated group shows that celebrated multiculturalism, highlighting his belief in the power of diversity. Notable exhibitions included a group show featuring Barkley L. Hendricks and Wangechi Mutu, which embodied his passion for “mad pluralism” and the celebration of different artistic perspectives.

A Generous Spirit and Lifelong Support

Beyond his role as a gallerist, Sikkema was known for his generosity and support for the arts community. He played a significant role in supporting queer art spaces such as Participant Inc., FIAR, and Boffo, among others. Sikkema’s genuine connection with artists went beyond the typical dealer-client relationship, as he approached them as a supportive friend.

A Lasting Legacy

Brent Sikkema’s impact on the art world cannot be overstated. His unwavering support for artists, embrace of multiculturalism, and generous spirit will forever be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and shape the art community for years to come.

As we mourn his loss, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched.
