Marlena Shaw was born on September 22, 1939, in New Rochelle, New York. She began her music career in the 1960s and went on to become an influential figure in various genres, including jazz, soul, disco, and R&B. Throughout her impressive career, she released 17 albums on eight different record labels.
Shaw initially gained popularity when Chess Records took notice of her talent in the ’60s. Under the label’s subsidiary, Cadet Records, she released the albums “From different bags” (1967) and “The spice of life” (1969). The latter album featured the hits “California Soul” and “Woman of the Ghetto,” both of which became iconic songs in her repertoire.
“California Soul,” written by Ashford & Simpson, has since been sampled by several other artists, solidifying Shaw’s impact on the music industry. Artists such as Gang Starr, Stereo MC’s, DJ Shadow, and Diplo have all incorporated elements of her iconic song into their work.
In 1972, Shaw joined Blue Note Records, where she released albums like “Marlena,” “From the depths of my soul,” and “Only a matter of time.” Later, in 1977, she released “Sweet beginnings” under Columbia Records.
