Canadian Pole Vault record holder Shawn Barber dies at 29

Tragic Loss of a Talented Athlete and Good-Hearted Person

Shawn Barber, the Canadian record holder and 2015 world champion in pole vault, has passed away at the young age of 29. The news of his untimely death was confirmed by his agent, Paul Doyle, who revealed that Barber died on Wednesday (Jan 17) at his home in Kirkwood, Texas due to medical complications. The world of athletics mourns the loss of an incredible athlete and a kind-hearted individual.

A Stellar Career and Remarkable Achievements

Barber’s journey to success in the world of pole vaulting was nothing short of extraordinary. In 2015, he claimed gold at the Pan American Games, showcasing his exceptional talent. Just weeks later, he shocked the athletics world by winning the world title in Beijing, defeating renowned athletes such as Raphael Holzdeppe and Renaud Lavillenie. This victory established him as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.

His exceptional abilities were further highlighted by his Canadian record jump of 6.0 metres, which he achieved on January 15, 2016. This record still stands today, a testament to his skill and dedication. Barber’s talent also earned him a spot in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where he represented Canada on the global stage.

A Passion for Pole Vaulting from a Young Age

Barber’s passion for pole vaulting ignited at the tender age of seven. His remarkable talent was evident even in his early years, as he shattered the US high school record by more than a foot. He continued to impress throughout his career, securing back-to-back NCAA indoor titles for the University of Akron in 2014 and 2015, followed by the NCAA outdoor title in 2015.

Interestingly, Barber held dual citizenship, as his father George, who was also his coach, hailed from Kincardine, northwest of Toronto. When the opportunity arose for him to compete for Canada, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps and represent the country that held a special place in his heart.

Fondly Remembered and Deeply Missed

Shawn Barber leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond his exceptional athletic achievements. He was known for his kind-hearted nature, always putting others ahead of himself. His agent, Paul Doyle, aptly described him as more than just an incredible athlete. The loss of such a good person at such a young age is truly tragic.

Barber is survived by his loving father George, his mother Ann, and his brother David. The world of athletics mourns the passing of this talented individual and sends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
