Former Ghanaian Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament, Mark Woyongo, Passes Away at 78
Mr Mark Owen Woyongo, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, has sadly passed away at the age of 78. His family sources confirmed his death, revealing that he had been unwell for some time. The former Upper East Regional Minister breathed his last in Accra on Wednesday, January 17, 2023.
A Remarkable Political Journey
Mark Woyongo served as the Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central Constituency from 2012 to 2016. However, he lost the seat in the subsequent election to the late Joseph Kofi Addo of the New Patriotic Party. Following this defeat, Woyongo announced his retirement from politics, declaring that he would not pursue any political positions in the future.
His political career began in 2008 when he contested in the parliamentary election under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket. Although he secured an impressive 41.7% of the votes, he narrowly lost to Joseph Kofi Adda of the New Patriotic Party by a margin of 1,130 votes (3.5%).
Despite the setback, Woyongo’s dedication and capabilities caught the attention of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who appointed him as the Upper East Regional Minister in 2009. He continued to hold this position under former President John Dramani Mahama following President Mills’ untimely demise.
Recognizing his knowledge and expertise, President Mahama nominated Woyongo for the esteemed position of Minister for Defence in 2013. This appointment showcased the confidence placed in him by the government and highlighted his contributions to the nation.
