MARIN COUNTY, California (KPIX) — Marin County authorities have made a breakthrough in a cold case that has puzzled investigators for over four decades. The body of a man found in the Muir Woods National Monument in 1982 has finally been positively identified.
In a recent press release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Department, it was revealed that the long unidentified individual was San Francisco resident Sigvard Svensson.
The skeletal remains of the man, initially known as Marin County John DOE 82-278, were discovered near the Deer Park Fire Trail in Marin County, California, back in November 1982. At the time, investigators determined that the individual, a male approximately 5’8″ tall, was likely between 60 and 70 years old. The man was found wearing a white collared shirt, gray socks, and size 11.5 white tennis shoes.
Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement over the years, the case remained unsolved due to a lack of viable leads. However, in April 2018, details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) in a renewed effort to identify the man.
Two years ago, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of the California Department of Justice’s Jan Bashinski Lab and Othram Forensics to develop a genetic profile that could aid in identifying John DOE 82-278. Through their efforts, a DNA profile was successfully extracted from the forensic evidence, leading to new investigative leads.
Following up on this new information, coroner investigators were able to track down potential relatives of the unidentified man. DNA samples were collected from a potential relative and compared to the DNA profile, resulting in the positive identification of Svensson. Born on February 4th, 1908, Svensson immigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1926, eventually settling in San Francisco.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division expressed their gratitude to the California DOJ and Othram for their efforts in solving this long-standing mystery. The statement also offered condolences to Svensson’s family and friends.
