TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — After more than 25 years, skeletal remains discovered near a western Indiana highway overpass have been identified as those of Mitchell Preston, an Indiana man who vanished in 1997, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Preston, a 47-year-old man from Anderson, was last seen in August 1997 while he was on foot, travelling to California from central Indiana. His disappearance left his family and authorities puzzled for decades.

The remains were found by a state highway worker in January 1998 near an Interstate 70 overpass in Vigo County, close to the Illinois border, approximately 120 miles (193 kilometers) southwest of Anderson. Despite extensive efforts over the years, the remains remained unidentified until recently.

State police, in collaboration with the Vigo County Coroner’s Office and the University of Indianapolis, turned to Othram, a forensic genetic genealogy company, last year. Othram successfully developed a DNA profile from the skeletal remains, which led detectives to reach out to potential relatives of the unidentified individual.

Through DNA provided by Preston’s family members, investigators were able to confirm that the remains belonged to Mitchell Preston, bringing some closure to his family. However, the circumstances surrounding his death still remain a mystery, and the case remains an open investigation.

Sgt. Matt Ames of the Indiana State Police urged the public to come forward with any information they may have regarding Preston’s disappearance. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the state police at 1-800-225-8576.
