SHAWNEE COUNTY — The tragic incident involving the death of a child in Shawnee County has taken another devastating turn as the woman accused in the case has also passed away.
Shyla M. Goracke, a 29-year-old resident of Topeka, tragically succumbed on Monday, according to the statement provided by Shawnee County Sheriff’s Deputy Abigail Christian.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded shortly after 11:30 a.m. on June 20 when the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a distressing 911 call concerning an alarming situation at SW Worwick Town Road. Upon arrival at the scene, first responders were met with a harrowing sight – a child, later identified as 9-year-old Zerick I. Ozuna, was found inside the residence with severe wounds to the chest and neck. Tragically, the young boy was declared deceased at the scene.
Following the discovery, deputies took Goracke, who was revealed to be the mother of the child, into custody. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment. At present, the sheriff’s office has refrained from divulging any additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding Goracke’s death or the findings of the autopsy conducted on the 9-year-old victim.
