The brutal killings of two North Texas store clerks last week have shocked the community. The suspect, Davonta Lamond Mathis, 21, is now facing charges of capital murder, murder, and evading arrest.

Suspect’s Alleged Actions

According to arrest warrant affidavits obtained by WFAA, Mathis allegedly shot both victims at each location after stealing lottery tickets and cigarillos. The first victim, Muhammad Hussain, 60, was killed at the Jaxx Fuel gas station in Mesquite. The second victim, Gopi Krishna Dasari, was killed at the Fox Gas Station in Dallas.

Details of the Killings

In the first killing, Mathis reportedly walked into the gas station wearing a dark hoodie and a red bandana. Surveillance footage captured him quickly shooting Hussain with a handgun before grabbing lottery tickets and fleeing the scene.

For the second killing, Mathis allegedly walked towards Dasari and, after a few seconds, pulled out a black semiautomatic pistol and fired multiple shots, killing Dasari instantly. Mathis then proceeded to grab cigarillos before leaving the store.

Arrest and Confession

About 50 minutes after the second killing, Mesquite police spotted the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to pull him over, resulting in a chase. Eventually, Mathis was apprehended, and a .380-caliber pistol was found in his possession. During police interviews, Mathis admitted to both killings.

Legal Proceedings

Mathis has been booked into the Dallas County Jail with a bond set at $7.5 million. The community is reeling from the senseless violence that has taken the lives of two innocent store clerks.
