A 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody by authorities following a fatal shooting incident in Elgin, where a 24-year-old man from Algonquin lost his life in what appears to be an act of self-defence.

According to reports, the Elgin Police Department received a distress call around 11:36 p.m. on June 16, prompting officers to rush to the 600 block of Villa Street in response to a shooting incident.

Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered an adult male with severe gunshot wounds. The victim was swiftly transported to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Tragically, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the man, identified as Kevin Ambriz, succumbed to his injuries on the afternoon of June 18. The cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.

Following the incident, detectives from the Elgin Police Department’s Major Investigations Division launched a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

It was revealed during the investigation that a confrontation had erupted between Ambriz and the teenage suspect, during which Ambriz reportedly brandished a knife. In response, the juvenile discharged a firearm, striking Ambriz.

The 16-year-old was subsequently apprehended by the Major Investigations Division without any resistance on the following Tuesday. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office was promptly notified and, after reviewing the case details, determined that the shooting was an act of self-defence.

As a result, the juvenile faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, classified as a Class 3 felony, along with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, designated as a Class 4 felony. The suspect has since been transported to the Kane County Youth Home.

An obituary for Ambriz has been announced, with a visitation scheduled to take place at Dundee Funeral Home in East Dundee from 3-9 p.m. on Tuesday. Burial services will follow on Wednesday at the Algonquin Cemetery.
