A man has been arrested in Covington after allegedly breaking into a homeowner’s garage and causing a disturbance, resulting in a confrontation with police officers. The suspect, identified as Steven Welch, 44, is facing charges of burglary, criminal mischief, and menacing, according to jail records.
The incident took place on a Saturday at a residence in Covington. The homeowner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, reported hearing a noise coming from his garage. Upon investigating, he discovered Welch on his property, who proceeded to smash several windows with a 2×4. The homeowner then confronted Welch, who was reportedly stuck in chains, and called 911 for assistance.
Upon arrival, Covington police found Welch covered in oil and in a state of partial resistance. It is reported that Welch caused over $1,000 in damages to the officers’ uniforms and even swung the 2×4 at them during the arrest.
Police officers described Welch as armed with a pole initially, which he later switched to a 2×4 for increased reach. Welch’s bond has been set at $2,500, and he is scheduled to appear in court on July 2.
