Manhunt underway for suspect who shot man selling salt instead of shabu in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Police in Cebu City are currently conducting a manhunt operation for the suspect involved in the shooting of a 23-year-old man who allegedly sold salt instead of shabu in Barangay Tejero on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

This information was disclosed by Police Major John Lambert Yango, the chief of Waterfront Police Station, in an interview with CDN Digital on Tuesday, June 25.

According to Yango, the suspect and his family members were not found during the pursuit operation.

The shooting took place around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, with the victim identified as a 23-year-old known as “Jefferson,” a local resident.

The suspect, who is acquainted with the victim and allegedly involved in illegal drug activities, is a porter at Pier 4 and has a history of prior arrests related to drugs and gambling.

Yango refrained from revealing the suspect’s identity as the investigation is ongoing. He mentioned that illegal drugs are being considered as a potential motive for the shooting.

Reportedly, the assailant was angered by the victim’s practice of substituting salt for shabu when selling to customers. Witnesses stated that the suspect confronted the victim outside his residence in Sitio Silangan 2, Brgy. Tejero.

The witness claimed that after a brief exchange, the suspect fired shots at Jefferson, striking him in the face and shoulder. The assailant then fled on a black motorcycle but returned to shoot Jefferson in the jaw.

Yango added that the victim’s modus operandi of selling salt instead of shabu had left drug users dissatisfied, leading to potential conflicts.

As of now, the Waterfront Police Station is actively searching for the suspect, who is evading capture. Meanwhile, Jefferson is scheduled for surgery to address his injuries.
