A, who has been identified as one of the perpetrators in the Miryang female middle school girl group sexual assault case, has retired from the company.

The company where A was employed released a statement on its official website on the 24th, announcing, “Employees involved in cases that have garnered social attention have been retired,” and further added, “We are committed to upholding the company’s social responsibilities.”

The revelation of A’s identity was made public through a YouTube channel called ‘Battle Rabbit’ on the 21st. In the video, the YouTuber disclosed information about A, stating, “He is one of the previously undisclosed individuals,” and “I have learned that he was actively participating in a golf club in Miryang until recently, is also a member of a badminton club, and is in the process of marrying someone he met through the golf club.”

Company Background and Salary Details

The company where A was employed was recognised as a ‘Representative Longevity Company in Korea’ in 2023 due to its widespread presence across the country. Upon investigation on an annual salary inquiry site, it was revealed that the starting salary at the company is over 40 million won, and considering A’s tenure of over 10 years, he would likely be earning between 70 million and 80 million won.

Following the release of the YouTube video, the company issued a statement on its website, stating, “We are currently verifying the authenticity of the incident in question and will take necessary actions based on the findings.”

Dismissal of Other Perpetrators

In recent developments, several other perpetrators linked to the Miryang female middle school girl group sexual assault case have also lost their jobs as their identities were exposed through social media platforms. Among them, a perpetrator employed at an electronics manufacturer in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, and another perpetrator working for a local public company in Miryang were also dismissed.

The Miryang Sexual Assault Case

The Miryang sexual assault case dates back to 2004, where 44 male students were involved in the year-long sexual assault of a middle school girl. Following investigations by the Ulsan District Prosecutors’ Office, 10 of the perpetrators were indicted and sentenced to juvenile detention, while the remaining 20 were also sent to juvenile detention centres. Some perpetrators reached settlements with the victim, while others were not included in the complaint, resulting in a decision of “no right to appeal.”

The lack of punishment for all 44 individuals involved in the case and the absence of criminal records sparked controversy. The incident served as inspiration for the production of the movie “Han Gongju” and the drama series “Signal.”
