A shocking incident unfolded in North Highlands, California, on Sunday as a husband and wife duo were apprehended by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly engaging in the sex trafficking of two 17-year-old girls.
The arrest came after a vigilant sheriff’s deputy on patrol near Watt Avenue and Winona Way spotted two young girls dressed in lingerie near a vehicle around 8 p.m. Upon approaching them, the deputy discovered that the girls were victims of sex trafficking.
Further investigation by detectives revealed that the two girls were being trafficked by individuals known to them as family friends. The suspects were identified as 46-year-old John Cheso and 35-year-old Shannon Powell, who the girls referred to as their “street parents.”
Both Cheso and Powell were taken into custody on felony human trafficking charges. As of Monday, they remain behind bars, with Cheso held on a $2 million bail and scheduled to appear in court on June 26, while Powell is held on a $1 million bail and set to appear in court on June 25.
Authorities suspect that there may be more victims of sex trafficking connected to the case. Individuals with any information are urged to contact the sheriff’s office at 916-874-5115.
The sheriff’s office also highlighted that the deputy who rescued the two victims had recently saved another young girl from a similar predicament.
