US President Joe Biden condemns attempted drowning of Palestinian-American child in Texas

WASHINGTON, United States — US President Joe Biden expressed his outrage on Monday over reports that a woman allegedly tried to drown a Palestinian-American child at a pool in Texas.

According to court records, the woman, identified as Elizabeth Wolf, has been charged with capital murder in connection with the incident that took place in May and recently gained national attention.

The 42-year-old suspect reportedly approached a mother wearing a hijab at a suburban apartment pool near Dallas. She asked the mother if her six-year-old son and three-year-old daughter belonged to her and made racial statements, as per US media reports.

Subsequently, the woman allegedly grabbed the boy, who managed to break free, and then targeted the girl, pushing her underwater.

President Biden expressed his sympathies, stating, “No child should ever be subjected to a violent attack, and my heart goes out to the family. I am deeply disturbed by the reports of an attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian-American at a neighborhood pool.”

Over the weekend, the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a press conference regarding the incident and called for a hate crimes investigation.

In a statement released by CAIR, the mother revealed that her family are American citizens of Palestinian descent.

The incident comes amidst heightened tensions surrounding the conflict in Gaza, which has sparked protests and incidents of anti-Semitic and Islamophobic behaviour across the US.

Notably, in November, a man shot and injured three students of Palestinian origin in Vermont, while in October, a six-year-old Muslim boy was fatally stabbed near Chicago in a crime linked to the Gaza conflict.

These alarming incidents underscore the urgent need for unity and tolerance in the face of rising hate crimes and prejudice.
