Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Austin Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the death of a 35-year-old man who died in police custody following a disturbance at a convenience store in southeast Austin. The incident took place on Monday, June 17, at the Circle K Convenience Store located at the 8801 S. Interstate Highway 35 frontage road.

Disturbance at Circle K Convenience Store

According to reports, multiple 911 calls were made around 4 p.m. reporting an incident at the store. Witnesses described the man, identified as Jermaine Joseph Sims, as behaving erratically and throwing items inside the business.

Shortly after the disturbance, around 4:05 p.m., Sims allegedly stole a pick-up truck from a gas pump at the store and drove onto the southbound frontage road of I-35 at Slaughter Lane in the wrong direction. He then proceeded to crash into multiple vehicles before being apprehended by Austin Police officers at 4:10 p.m.

Medical Response and Death

After being taken into custody, Sims was transported by Austin-Travis County EMS to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Sims was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m. The Austin Police Department did not provide specific details regarding Sims’ injuries or whether force was used during the arrest.

Due to the circumstances surrounding Sims’ death while in police custody, the incident is now being investigated as an in-custody death. The official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

Investigations Underway

The Austin Police Department has initiated two separate investigations into the incident. The first is a criminal investigation being conducted by the APD Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office. The second is an administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, overseen by the Office of Police Oversight.

Body-worn camera footage from the officers involved and a private community member’s dash camera captured the incident. Per APD policy, the videos will be released to the public within 10 days.
