A professional lifeguard and pipeline surfer who also appeared in movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush” tragically lost his life after being attacked by a shark while surfing off the island of Oahu in Hawaii on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities received a distress call around 1 p.m. reporting a surfer with multiple shark bites at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Lifeguards swiftly responded and were able to bring the victim, identified as 49-year-old Tamayo Perry, to shore via jetski. Despite their efforts, Perry was pronounced dead upon arrival, as confirmed by Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department during a press conference.

Following the harrowing incident, shark warnings were promptly posted in the area to alert other surfers and beachgoers of the potential danger lurking in the waters.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi took to Facebook to pay tribute to Perry, highlighting his bravery, commitment, and unwavering dedication to keeping the community safe. Blangiardi hailed Perry as a “well-known North Shore waterman” whose legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched.

Surfing Community Mourns

Surfline, a leading surf forecasting and news website, shared insights into Perry’s background, noting his roots in Oahu and his rise to prominence after winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999. Alongside his wife, Emilia, Perry operated a surf school named Oahu Surfing Experience, where he imparted safe surfing practices and etiquette to aspiring surfers.

Despite his tragic end, Perry leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond the waves, with acting credits to his name on IMDb, including appearances in popular shows and movies such as “Hawaii Five-0” and “The Big Bounce.”

Shark Incidents in Hawaii

According to Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, there have been four shark incidents in the state this year, with most involving surfers.
