The child, identified as Zayan Mayanja, was reported missing from a residence on Chestnut Road in the Nabnasset area of town. Westford police swiftly responded to the distress call, launching an extensive search operation involving local and state authorities on foot, by boat, and even in the air.
The search came to a devastating end shortly after midnight when a NEMLEC K9 Unit and a Westford police officer discovered young Zayan in the waters of Nabnasset Lake, situated behind a property on Lake Shore Drive. Despite the best efforts of police and firefighters to revive him, the boy was rushed to Lowell General Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.
Zayan Mayanja was a student within the Westford Public Schools system, and his untimely passing has left the community in mourning. In response to this heartbreaking event, grief counselors have been made available to provide support to friends and family members of the young victim.
