The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit has taken charge of the investigation into the death of an inmate at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Allegany County. The inmate, identified as 80-year-old Ralph Ruark, was pronounced dead by EMS personnel around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Following his death, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will conduct an examination to determine the cause and manner of death. Approximately 40 minutes after the incident, investigators contacted the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit to lead the investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, the findings will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
