In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young boy with autism who went missing in Westford on Sunday night has been found dead after an extensive search effort. The boy, identified as Zayan Mayanja, a six-year-old non-verbal autistic child, had managed to escape his home through a window, sparking a frantic search by authorities and volunteers.

The Westford Police Department responded to the call for help around 9:12 p.m. on Sunday, with officers and K-9 units scouring the area for any sign of the missing boy. Various search techniques, including the deployment of drones, a boat in Nabnasset Lake, and a RAVE alert to residents, were used in an effort to locate Zayan. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing was also called in to assist in the search.

Tragically, around 12:08 a.m. on Monday, Zayan was discovered in the water of Nabnasset Lake behind a residence on Lake Shore Drive South. Despite efforts to revive him, including CPR, Zayan was pronounced dead upon arrival at Lowell General Hospital.

The Westford Police Department expressed their deepest condolences to Zayan’s family and friends, urging the public and media to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. Zayan was a student in the Westford Public Schools, and support services are being made available to those who may need assistance coping with this tragic loss.

As the investigation into this heartbreaking incident continues, the Westford Police Department thanked all the officers and telecommunicators who assisted in the search effort, along with the various agencies involved in the operation.
