New Mexico State Police are currently investigating a shooting incident involving the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place at the Family Dollar in Capitan, where deputies responded to a report of shoplifting just before 1 p.m. on Saturday.

According to State Police officials, the suspects involved in the incident have been identified as 22-year-old Victor Herrera and 25-year-old Maggie Mondragon. The suspects were reportedly driving a stolen truck when deputies attempted to pull them over.

Upon being approached by the deputies, both suspects fled the scene. Mondragon was apprehended by the deputies, but Herrera managed to escape and later stole another pickup truck. Deputies pursued Herrera, leading to a chase during which a shot was fired.

Arrest and Charges

After a high-speed pursuit, deputies were able to stop Herrera’s vehicle and take him into custody. Herrera sustained minor injuries during the chase and was subsequently treated for them. He now faces charges for the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer.
