Accident – Death – Obituary News : A father has been taken into custody after an officer reportedly caught him trying to drown his children at a beach in Connecticut, an incident described by local authorities as a “heinous act.”

The man, identified as 41-year-old Romney Desronvil from Queens, New York, stands accused of intentionally attempting to drown his two children on Saturday, according to a statement from the West Haven Police Department.

Law enforcement officials stated that a patrol officer in West Haven observed a Nissan SUV and heard loud screaming coming from the beach around 2:30 a.m. Upon closer inspection, the officer noticed Desronvil and the children in the water, drifting away. The father allegedly ordered the officer to “stay back” after entering the water.

Multiple agencies quickly responded to the scene to assist in rescuing the children, whose ages were not disclosed by the West Haven Police Department.

“Officers immediately entered the water and were nearly 100 yards away from shore at this time,” the press release stated. The West Shore Fire Department also dispatched a fire boat to aid in the rescue.

The officer managed to bring the children back to shore, where first responders administered life-saving measures before transporting them to a local hospital. The children were reportedly in the intensive care unit as of Saturday.

West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer confirmed that the children’s mother had traveled from New York to be with them during this difficult time.

Desronvil’s charges are pending as detectives continue to investigate the incident. USA TODAY reached out to the West Haven Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office for further comment.

“It is without a doubt the swift response by our patrol officers saved the lives of these children,” the police stated in the release. “The communication and collaborative efforts made by the West Shore Fire Department and eventually the New Haven Police Department allowed for immediate medical aid and also the apprehension of Desronvil.”

West Haven is located approximately 5 miles from New Haven.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of timely intervention in emergency situations involving children. The quick actions of law enforcement and emergency responders undoubtedly played a crucial role in preventing a tragic outcome.
