Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A woman from Center Township has been handed a sentence of 18 months to five years in a state correctional institution after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in relation to the tragic death of a man from Homer City in July 2021.

During the sentencing, which took place on Friday, Indiana County President Judge Thomas M. Bianco also made the decision to revoke the probation of the woman, identified as Sydney Michelle Horel, aged 28, due to a previous felony case of theft by unlawful taking in 2019.

As part of the sentencing, Bianco ordered Horel to be committed to Indiana County Jail for a period of 30 days to two years less one day. Following this period, she was paroled forthwith and had her supervision by the Indiana County Probation Department terminated.

Details of the Case

The incident in question took place on July 27, 2021, when state police Troop A, Indiana, Patrol Unit were called to assist emergency medical personnel with a potential drug overdose victim at a residence on Sycamore Street in Homer City.

The victim, identified as Seth Andrew Smith, aged 30, was discovered deceased inside the property. Subsequent investigations, including an autopsy and toxicology testing conducted at ForensicDX in Windber, revealed that Smith’s cause of death was acute intoxication due to a combination of fentanyl and heroin.

Despite the incident occurring in 2021, Horel was not charged in relation to Smith’s death until May 2023. State police spokesperson Trooper Cliff Greenfield explained that extensive interviews, including discussions with Horel, as well as a review of cell phone records, were conducted before charges were brought against her.

Further analysis of two stamp bags recovered from the scene revealed the presence of 4-ANPP, acetyl fentanyl, fentanyl, heroin, and morphine. This evidence played a crucial role in the case against Horel.

Conclusion

The sentencing of Sydney Michelle Horel for involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Seth Andrew Smith serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of drug-related incidents. The legal proceedings highlight the importance of thorough investigations and the pursuit of justice in cases of this nature.
