An elderly woman has tragically lost her life in a devastating fire that occurred in Alexander County this morning. The victim has been identified as 80-year-old Elinor Martin, a resident of Taylorsville.

Emergency Response

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the Frank Smith Mobile Home Park, located off N.C. 16 North in the Sugar Loaf community, just before 10 a.m. Units from Sugar Loaf, Taylorsville, and Vashti quickly responded to the scene in an effort to contain the blaze.

Cause of the Fire

According to Alexander County Mark Earle, the fire is believed to have started due to a faulty extension cord. Tragically, two dogs and a cat also lost their lives in the blaze. Martin resided at the mobile home with her son, his wife, and a child. Fortunately, the other family members were not present in the home at the time of the incident.

Discovery of the Victim

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Elinor Martin on her bed with a walker nearby. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save her from the blaze. The Red Cross has stepped in to provide support to the surviving family members during this difficult time.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in the home. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Elinor Martin during this challenging time.
