Callie Weems, a young mother, was enjoying her new role with her 10-month-old daughter Ivy before tragedy struck at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas. Weems, 23, was one of four people who lost their lives in the shooting incident that also left 11 others injured, including the alleged gunman, 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey.

According to authorities, just moments before the shooting, Weems was marvelling at the fact that her baby girl had allowed her to sleep in until 9 a.m. that morning. Her mother, Helen Browning, fondly remembered how Ivy brought joy and wonder into Weems’ life during those precious months.

Browning recounted the last conversation she had with her daughter before the tragic events unfolded. Weems, a nurse, tragically lost her life while trying to assist another victim of the shooting, displaying remarkable selflessness in the face of danger, as noted by Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar.

State police reported that a total of 15 people were shot during the incident, including civilians, law enforcement officers, and the gunman himself. Posey, armed with a shotgun and a pistol, carried out the attack with no apparent personal connection to the victims.

Previous Incidents

This is not the first mass shooting to occur at a U.S. grocery store in recent years. Past tragedies include a 2022 incident in Buffalo where a white supremacist targeted Black individuals, and another in Boulder, Colorado, where 10 people lost their lives.

Community in Mourning

The city of Fordyce, with a population of around 3,200 residents, is grappling with the aftermath of the shooting. City council member Roderick Rogers described the scene as reminiscent of a “war zone,” with residents feeling fearful and anxious about their safety.

The wounded victims, ranging in age from 20 to 65, are receiving medical care, with five individuals still in hospital, including one in critical condition. Posey, currently in custody, faces multiple charges of capital murder.

Personal Connections

The emotional impact of the shooting was further intensified for Helen Browning, who knew one of the other victims, Roy Sturgis, personally. Sturgis, a logger and devoted father, was part of Browning’s extended family.

Shirley Taylor, 62, and Ellen Shrum, 81, were also among those who tragically lost their lives in the attack. Taylor, known for her caregiving and crocheting skills, was described by her daughter as the “family rock.”

Seeking Justice

As the community mourns the loss of their loved ones, Browning is determined to raise her granddaughter Ivy, ensuring she knows of her mother’s love and legacy. Posey, the alleged gunman, will face legal consequences for his actions as the investigation continues.

As Fordyce tries to heal from this senseless act of violence, the resilience and unity of its residents stand as a testament to their strength in the face of tragedy.
