The Pune district police have apprehended the nephew of a legislator affiliated with the ruling Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) following a tragic incident on the Pune-Nashik National Highway. The incident involved a sports utility vehicle (SUV) allegedly driven by the MLA’s nephew, which collided with a motorbike while on the wrong side of the road. This collision resulted in the death of a 19-year-old individual, identified as Om Bhalerao, and caused injuries to another person who is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The suspect in question, Mayur Mohite, who is in his thirties, is related to NCP (Ajit Pawar)’s Dilip Mohite Patil, the MLA representing Pune’s Khed-Alandi Assembly segment. The tragic event took place in the jurisdiction of Manchar police in Ambegaon tehsil.
According to the authorities, the fatal accident occurred on June 22 between 9 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. Investigations indicate that Mohite was driving his SUV at a high speed in the wrong direction on the highway, leading to the collision with the motorbike and the subsequent fatality. Tragically, Bhalerao sustained severe injuries and passed away shortly after the collision.
Following the accident, it was alleged that Mohite fled the scene without providing assistance or seeking medical help for the victim. However, Mohite Patil has denied these accusations, stating that his nephew promptly arranged for the injured individual to be transported to the hospital by calling an ambulance. Mohite then surrendered himself at a police station after the incident.
Addressing the media, Mohite Patil emphasized that he advised his nephew to report to the authorities to prevent any escalation at the accident site. Contrary to claims of negligence, Mohite Patil asserted that his nephew acted responsibly by ensuring the injured party received medical attention.
Additionally, Mohite Patil refuted allegations of his nephew driving under the influence of alcohol, asserting that Mohite does not consume alcoholic beverages.
This incident follows a recent high-profile case in Pune where a 17-year-old, under the influence of alcohol, was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two IT professionals in Kalyani Nagar. Subsequent investigations into that case revealed a complex web of cover-ups involving medical, legal, and political entities. As a result, doctors from Sassoon General Hospital in Pune have been arrested, and another NCP MLA associated with Ajit Pawar has faced allegations of interfering with the investigation.
