A woman in Euless, Texas, is facing charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child after allegedly trying to drown another woman’s three-year-old child at an apartment complex pool, according to reports.

The Texas chapter of a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, CAIR, is calling for a hate crime investigation after the incident, which they describe as a “bias-motivated murder attempt targeting Muslim children.” The shocking incident took place on May 19 at an apartment complex pool in Euless.

Elizabeth Wolf, 42, who was reportedly intoxicated, tried to drown the child and got into an argument with the child’s mother, witnesses said. Wolf allegedly made racist remarks towards the mother, who was wearing a hijab and “modest swimwear.” She also attempted to grab the woman’s six-year-old son, who managed to escape but was scratched in the process.

According to the mother, Wolf then grabbed her three-year-old daughter and forced her underwater. The child was yelling for help and coughing up water, but the mother was able to save her with the help of a bystander.

Wolf was arrested for public intoxication, but while being escorted away, she allegedly threatened the mother and her family. The mother, identified as “Mrs H,” who is originally from Palestine, expressed fear for her and her children’s safety following the incident.

Wolf was later charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child. CAIR-Austin Operations Manager, Shaimaa Zayan, called for a hate crime investigation and highlighted the need for addressing Islamophobia and anti-Arab sentiment.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family affected by the incident. The fundraiser aims to help the family with financial stability as they cope with the aftermath of the traumatic event.
