Authorities in Hanwella have apprehended eight young individuals in connection with the reported gang-rape of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in the Jalthara area. The suspects, aged between 19 and 21 and hailing from Nawagamuwa and Embulgama, have been charged with rape and abetting the crime.
Among the arrested individuals is the victim’s boyfriend, as confirmed by the Hanwella Police. Deputy Inspector General Renuka Jayasundara has assured a thorough investigation into the matter.
The incident unfolded on a Poya day morning when the teenage girl, a resident of Kosgama, accompanied her aunt to a dansela. However, she reportedly strayed from the planned outing, claiming to visit a bookstore and borrowing money from a friend to rendezvous with her boyfriend.
Upon meeting her boyfriend at his residence, the girl engaged in sexual activity before being dropped off at Ambulgama on his motorcycle. Subsequently, two of the boyfriend’s associates intervened, escorting the girl to the Jalthara cemetery where they sexually assaulted her. Three more individuals joined the assault, leaving the victim traumatized.
Following the ordeal, the victim was left stranded at Hanwella Atigala junction with minimal fare for transportation. A compassionate police officer noticed her distress and provided assistance, eventually leading to the revelation of the harrowing events.
Upon the victim’s testimony and identification of the perpetrators, the Police swiftly acted, apprehending the suspects for further questioning. The victim was promptly examined by medical professionals and admitted to Homagama base hospital for necessary care.
In a parallel investigation under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General Renuka Jayasundara, it was uncovered that the victim had previously endured a similar assault by another former boyfriend and his associates two years prior. Authorities are diligently probing this prior incident alongside the present case.
The arrested suspects were presented before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court to face legal proceedings. The gravity of the offences has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for justice from the community.
