A man from New York was taken into custody over the weekend for reportedly trying to drown his two children at a beach in Connecticut. The incident took place in West Haven, where local police officers responded to a distress call in the early hours of Saturday, June 22.
According to a social media post by the West Haven Police Department, an officer on duty noticed a Nissan SUV parked near the beach and heard loud screams coming from the water around 2:31 a.m. The officer quickly approached the scene and saw a man with two young children in the water. The man appeared to be deliberately trying to drown the kids and was shouting at the officers to stay back.
The man, later identified as 41-year-old Romney Desronvil from Queens, was eventually subdued by the officers with the help of the West Shore Fire Department. The children were rescued from the water and taken to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Desronvil is expected to face charges of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of risk of injury, as reported by the local outlet New Haven Register. The incident is still under investigation by the authorities.
During a news conference, West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer praised the swift response of the law enforcement officers and emergency responders. She acknowledged the heroic efforts of the officers involved in saving the children’s lives and bringing the suspect into custody.
Both children, who are under 3 years old, are said to be improving in the hospital. Their mother, who was reportedly in New York at the time of the incident, rushed to be by their side in New Haven. The West Shore Fire Department also commended their personnel for providing immediate medical care to the children upon arrival.
