Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident unfolded in Assam’s Goalpara district on Saturday, as a 45-year-old man, Subhash Chandra Rabha, was reportedly trampled to death by a wild elephant. Forest officials, who were notified of the incident, discovered Rabha’s lifeless body the following morning.

“The dead body has been sent for postmortem examination, and we are currently gathering information from the local community,” stated forest officials involved in the case.

Rabha, a resident of Panditpara village under Rangjuli Police Station, had ventured out for a late-night walk when he was unexpectedly attacked by the wild elephant, according to eyewitnesses. The animal dragged Rabha to a nearby village, where it mercilessly trampled him to his untimely demise.

Upon being alerted by locals, the police and forest authorities promptly arrived at the scene and recovered Rabha’s body in the early hours of Sunday. Distraught residents of the area expressed their concerns about the recurring instances of human-elephant conflicts, urging for a lasting solution to prevent further tragedies.

“We live in constant fear due to the frequent encounters with wild elephants, yet we feel helpless as there seems to be no effective intervention from the forest department,” lamented a resident of the affected village.

Over the past couple of years, Assam has witnessed a troubling pattern of elephant fatalities, often attributed to electrocution. Forest officials revealed that many of these incidents occurred as a result of locals setting up live electric wires near their homes to deter elephant incursions.

In a separate incident on Friday, the carcass of an adult elephant was discovered in the Pengaree area of Tinsukia district, although the exact cause of death remained uncertain. The prevalence of such tragedies underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the escalating human-wildlife conflicts in the region.

As the community mourns the loss of Subhash Chandra Rabha, calls for proactive conservation efforts and sustainable coexistence between humans and elephants have grown louder. The challenges posed by these encounters underscore the critical importance of adopting holistic strategies to safeguard both wildlife and human lives in Assam..
