Authorities have taken into custody the nephew of a Maharashtra MLA following a tragic incident on the Pune-Nashik national highway that claimed the life of a 19-year-old motorcyclist. Mayur Mohite, who is the nephew of Dilip Mohite Patil, a legislator representing the Khed Alandi Assembly segment in Pune district, has been implicated in the case.
Dilip Mohite Patil is affiliated with the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The victim, identified as Om Bhalerao, lost his life in the collision.
According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the fatal accident occurred when Mayur Mohite was driving his SUV on the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with the motorbike ridden by the 19-year-old. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
Legislator’s Response
In response to the tragic incident, the MLA released a statement clarifying that his nephew did not attempt to flee the scene of the accident. He also emphasised that Mayur Mohite was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among members of the community, once again drawing attention to the issue of reckless driving in Pune.
Previous Incidents
This recent tragedy comes on the heels of another fatal accident in May, where two software engineers lost their lives after a speeding Porsche, reportedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a prominent real estate developer, collided with their vehicle. The teenager, who was found to be driving while intoxicated, was granted bail within 15 hours of the incident under lenient conditions.
The swift release of the accused prompted national outcry and led to the Juvenile Justice Board revising its decision, ultimately sending the teenager to an observation home. Subsequent investigations revealed attempts by the teen’s family members to conceal evidence, resulting in the arrest of several individuals involved in the cover-up.
As authorities continue to investigate these tragic incidents, the community remains vigilant in advocating for road safety and accountability among drivers on Pune’s highways.
