The Arkansas state police confirmed the unfortunate news of the fourth victim’s passing on Saturday evening. A total of 14 individuals were struck by gunfire during the harrowing ordeal, including 11 civilians, two law enforcement officers, and the suspect.

The deceased have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Callie Weems, 23, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81, all of whom were civilians caught in the crossfire.

Among the wounded, ranging in age from 20 to 65, four individuals remain hospitalized, with one woman in critical condition. The injured officers were identified as Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, who has been discharged from the hospital, and Stuttgart Police Officer John Hudson, 24, whose injuries are reported to be minor.

Suspect and Charges

The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, hailing from New Edinburg, will face four counts of capital murder in connection with the tragic incident. Following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, Posey was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into police custody and transferred to the Ouachita County Detention Center.

Motive Unknown

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. A media briefing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday to provide updates on the investigation. As of Friday, it was unclear whether Posey had legal representation, with no immediate response from the state police’s public information office.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a small town situated 65 miles south of Little Rock. Eyewitnesses, including Roderick Rogers, a city council member, described scenes of chaos as people sought refuge from the gunfire.

Video footage shared on social media captured the intensity of the situation, with individuals seen fleeing for safety and gunshots ringing out. The store’s windows bore the brunt of the attack, displaying numerous bullet holes, while spent shell casings littered the parking lot.

Previous Incidents

This tragedy adds to the list of mass shootings that have taken place in grocery stores in recent years. In 2022, a white supremacist murdered 10 Black individuals at a supermarket in Buffalo, while a similar incident in Boulder, Colorado, claimed the lives of 10 people just over a year prior.
