Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 42-year-old man was shot and killed by a deputy sheriff in response to a domestic disturbance call on Friday night. The incident took place in the Royal Oaks Subdivision off of FM 476 in Atascosa, Texas.

History of Domestic Disturbance Calls

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies had been called to the residence on multiple occasions in the past for similar domestic disturbance calls. The situation escalated on Friday night when a deputy sheriff responded to a call from a woman at the residence, reporting that her husband was arguing and punching the walls.

Confrontation with Suspect

When the deputy arrived at the scene, a male suspect, identified as Richard Albert Viscarra Jr., came to the door. The deputy ordered Viscarra to come outside, but instead of complying, Viscarra allegedly grabbed a large butcher knife and advanced towards the deputy.

Ignoring commands to stop and drop the knife, Viscarra reportedly positioned the knife in an aggressive manner and continued to advance towards the deputy. In response, the deputy fired four shots at Viscarra in self-defence.

Life-Saving Efforts and Investigation

Deputies at the scene performed life-saving efforts on Viscarra, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s wife informed deputies that Viscarra had threatened suicide by cop.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers. The 34-year-old deputy involved in the shooting is a 4 and a half-year veteran law enforcement officer and has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
