DHENKANAL: Traffic came to a standstill for more than an hour on NH-53, which connects Talcher to Jajpur road, on Friday following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 65-year-old man.
The victim, identified as Antaryami Sahoo from Jatia village, was on his way to the Sarang market on his bicycle when a speeding mini truck struck him from behind. The impact of the collision was fatal, leading to Sahoo’s immediate demise. The unfortunate incident occurred at 3 pm.
Upon hearing the news of Sahoo’s untimely death, local residents gathered at the scene and staged a demonstration by blocking the road. Their primary demand was for compensation to be provided to the family of the deceased. The standoff only came to an end after the intervention of the police.
Sub-divisional police officer of Kamakhyanagar, Snehasis Sahoo, stated that law enforcement officials promptly arrived at the location and managed to convince the protesters to discontinue the blockade. Assurances were given that steps would be taken to prevent similar road accidents in the future.
“The driver of the mini truck involved in the incident has been apprehended, and the vehicle has been impounded,” Sahoo confirmed. Additionally, he mentioned that police patrols along the route would be intensified to enhance road safety measures and prevent further accidents.
