Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 23-year-old man from Calexico is currently being held in custody at the Imperial County jail on charges of discharging a firearm in a gross and negligent manner. The suspect, identified as Ivan Morales, allegedly fired multiple rounds in close proximity to numerous occupied homes in the area.

The incident took place on Tuesday, June 18, when Morales was reportedly using an illegal firearm known as a “ghost gun” to shoot rounds at a dirt lot located west of La Jolla Palms Boulevard near the intersection of SPUD Moreno Street. The shots fired were reported to the Calexico dispatchers around 6:30 p.m.

Upon the arrival of the police at the scene, they were unable to locate the suspect. Despite utilizing air support from the U.S. Border Patrol, a thorough search of the neighborhood yielded no results.

Investigators recovered shell casings from the shooting at the dirt lot, which were held as evidence. Additionally, security footage from a nearby residence captured what is believed to be the suspect. However, no arrests were made on the night of the incident.

On the following day, Wednesday, June 19, at 7:18 a.m., patrol officers from Calexico responded to a residence in the 2400 block of H. Najera Avenue. Security footage indicated that Morales was present at the location. Officers approached the residence and detained Morales, who admitted to possessing a firearm inside the property.

The firearm was later identified as a 9mm “ghost gun,” which is a type of unserialized and untraceable firearm assembled from components that are often purchased as kits or separate pieces.
