A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder following an investigation by the Denton Police Department into a fatal fentanyl overdose. The incident took place on January 21, 2024, when officers responded to a call reporting an unconscious person in the 500 block of Inman Street. The victim, identified as 26-year-old Dylan King, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that King’s cause of death was due to a combination of cocaine and fentanyl toxicity.

Investigation Details

During their investigation, Denton PD detectives discovered that the victim had obtained narcotics containing fentanyl from a co-worker named Pedro Martinez. Martinez, who was already in Denton County Jail on unrelated charges, admitted to selling the narcotics to King and being aware that they contained fentanyl.

Charges and Arrest

On Tuesday, June 18, detectives obtained a warrant for Martinez’s arrest on the charge of murder. He is currently held in Denton County Jail, awaiting a bail hearing. This case marks the fifth fentanyl-related murder charge in Denton since a new state law came into effect on September 1, 2023. The law established a criminal offence of murder for supplying fentanyl that leads to a death.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with fentanyl misuse and the severe consequences that can result from its distribution. The Denton Police Department continues to work diligently to combat the illegal drug trade and hold accountable those responsible for supplying lethal substances.
