Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A pro-Israeli counterprotester will not be facing felony assault charges in connection with an alleged attack against occupants of a Palestinian solidarity encampment at UCLA last month, according to an announcement from Dist. Atty. George Gascón’s office on Friday.

Instead, the Los Angeles district attorney’s office revealed that 18-year-old Edan On, the individual in question, will have the case referred to the city attorney’s office for potential misdemeanor filing after a review of the evidence.

On was identified as a counterprotester at a pro-Palestinian demonstration that took place at UCLA on April 30. In videos that were widely circulated, a masked man in a white hoodie can be seen repeatedly striking protesters with a pole. Law enforcement sources confirmed the man as On, and footage of his actions was initially aired by CNN.

The UCLA Police Department conducted interviews with witnesses and victims related to the violence that erupted at the encampment. They reviewed security camera footage of the masked man and later confirmed his identity as On. Pro-Israeli counterprotesters, armed with fireworks, gas irritants, and blunt objects, engaged in violent attacks on students and faculty at the encampment for several hours, while private security guards and campus police looked on from a distance.

On was apprehended by police on May 23 at a business in Beverly Hills and was subsequently booked on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon. He was held in a Los Angeles County Jail on $30,000 bail, marking the first arrest in connection to the violent incident at UCLA.

According to Gascón’s office, On allegedly assaulted an individual between 12:30 p.m. on April 30 to 1:30 a.m. on May 1 during the clash at UCLA. However, the office stated that they could not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. On’s conduct directly caused the victim’s injury.

Gascón further clarified that there was no evidence indicating that On was working in collaboration with any other individuals, and their investigation did not uncover any proof of conspiracy or organised effort by On related to the incident.

The DA’s office revealed that there are no other alleged victims in the case, and the city attorney’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.

“This referral is in line with our commitment to applying the law fairly and ensuring that justice is served based on the available evidence,” Gascón’s office stated.

Another case related to the attacks at the UCLA encampment is currently under review by the DA’s office, although specifics on that matter have not been disclosed.

The encampment was set up by protesters on the UCLA campus to demand the university’s divestment from any financial ties with Israel due to the country’s ongoing conflict with Gaza following a terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.

Following the brawl on April 30, On’s mother made an online comment about his participation. In a now-deleted Facebook post, Sharon On-Siboni shared a photo of her son from a Fox 11 news segment at UCLA, captioning it in Hebrew, “Edan went to bully the Palestinian students in the tents at UCLA and played the song that they played to the Nukhba terrorists in prison!” as per a law enforcement source.
