A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning on Interstate 70 along the Kansas Turnpike in Douglas County, resulting in the untimely death of a young man from Topeka.
The victim of the fatal crash has been identified as 26-year-old Nash McKnight.
The Kansas Highway Patrol received reports of the collision at 2:18 a.m. on westbound I-70 near Big Springs, approximately 2 miles east of the Topeka Service Center on the turnpike.
According to the official crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the tragic incident involved a 2024 Kia Optima, driven by McKnight, and a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis, both travelling west on I-70.
The report states that McKnight’s Kia failed to maintain its lane and ended up sideswiping the Mercury, leading to a catastrophic chain of events.
Following the impact, the Mercury veered to the left and collided with the concrete barrier wall separating the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70.
Meanwhile, the Kia overturned, veered off the roadway, ejected McKnight, and collided with a rock wall, resulting in a devastating outcome.
Tragically, McKnight, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The authorities promptly notified his next of kin about the heartbreaking incident.
On the other hand, the driver of the Mercury, identified as 20-year-old Wyatt Vestal from Olathe, emerged from the collision unscathed. Vestal, who was wearing a seat belt, managed to escape the accident without any injuries.
Both McKnight and Vestal were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles at the time of the tragic collision, as confirmed by the Kansas Highway Patrol’s detailed crash log.
