Gary Weaver succumbed to his injuries at Grand Island Regional Hospital, and an autopsy has been ordered. Meanwhile, Mary Weaver remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, identified as James Thompson Jr., a 22-year-old from Elyria, Ohio, had fled the area but was later apprehended by the Nebraska State Patrol. State troopers engaged in a high-speed chase with a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph before the vehicle drove into the Platte River. After a search using a police dog, Thompson was located and taken into custody.
