An 11-year-old madrasa student tragically lost his life after drowning in floodwaters in Netrokona’s Kalmakanda Upazila. The incident occurred in Ratkanda village of Nazirpur Union around 11am on Friday, as confirmed by Lutful Haque, the officer-in-charge of Kalmakanda Police Station.
The victim, identified as Rifat Hossain, was a resident of Gazipur and had been staying in the village with his family for the past 20 days before Eid. He was a student at a madrasa in Gazipur.
According to OC Lutful, Rifat was swept away while bathing with other children on the submerged Palpara-Haripur road. Tragically, he did not know how to swim and was unable to save himself from the swiftly flowing floodwaters.
Local residents managed to rescue Rifat and rushed him to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex. Despite their efforts, the attending doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Expressing sorrow over the incident, OC Lutful mentioned that legal action would be taken in response to the tragic drowning of the young student. This unfortunate event comes just a day after another child drowned in floodwaters in Netrokona’s Mohanganj.
