The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has identified the teenager killed in the shooting as 17-year-old Emeshuon Wilkins. According to the SLMPD, Wilkins was allegedly in possession of a gun, which was recovered from the scene of the shooting.

Incident Details

The shooting took place around 1 p.m. on Tuesday near the corner of Whittier Street and Maffitt Avenue in The Ville neighborhood. Police officers with the Anti-Crime Task Force attempted to stop a stolen SUV, leading to a foot chase.

During the pursuit, Wilkins reportedly ran to a backyard, turned, and pointed a gun at an officer. In response, the officer shot Wilkins, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Involved

The SLMPD has not released the name of the officer who shot Wilkins but confirmed that the officer has 16 years of experience in law enforcement. The officer was wearing a body camera at the time of the incident, and investigators will review the footage as part of the ongoing investigation.

Major Janice Bockstruck, commander of the department’s Bureau of Professional Standards, stated that investigators will also determine if Wilkins fired his weapon at the officer before he was shot.

Additional Suspects

Another armed suspect involved in the incident was taken into custody without further incident. A third individual found in the backseat of the stolen SUV was also apprehended by authorities.
