The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that the man who was fatally shot by Vancouver police on Monday has been identified as 40-year-old Jonathan West Nelson. According to the medical examiner, Nelson died from “multiple gunshot wounds.”
Incident details
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday morning when Vancouver police responded to reports of a man near Northeast Andersen Road allegedly pointing a gun at people in a McDonald’s parking lot. Upon locating the suspect a few blocks away, police attempted to apprehend him. However, the man did not comply with commands, leading officers to release a K9 on him.
Subsequently, the man reportedly pointed his gun at law enforcement officers, prompting four police officers to open fire, striking him. Unfortunately, during the exchange, the K9 was accidentally shot in the tail. Authorities rushed to provide aid to the injured man and the dog, who were then transported to a hospital for treatment.
Medical Examiner’s findings
Jonathan West Nelson, identified as the suspect in the incident, succumbed to his injuries on the public sidewalk. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office released a statement on Thursday confirming the cause of death as “multiple gunshot wounds.”

William Buschtschosik, a witness to the shooting, recounted hearing multiple gunshots in quick succession during the incident. The rapid gunfire startled residents in the area.
