An attempted robbery at a rest stop in Nebraska has resulted in a tragic outcome, with a 72-year-old man losing his life and his 71-year-old wife left in critical condition after being attacked by a knife-wielding assailant.

The victims, Gary and Mary Weaver, hailing from Eureka, Missouri, were on a cross-state journey in their mobile home when they made a stop at the rest area along Interstate 80 around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, as reported by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Responding deputies discovered the couple with multiple stab wounds, with Gary Weaver succumbing to his injuries at Grand Island Regional Hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled for him, while his wife remains in a critical state with life-threatening injuries.

The perpetrator, identified as 22-year-old James Thompson Jr. from Elyria, Ohio, had fled the scene but was swiftly captured by the Nebraska State Patrol following a high-speed pursuit. Troopers engaged in a chase reaching speeds of up to 120 mph before the suspect’s vehicle veered off the interstate and into the Platte River.

After a search involving a police dog, Thompson was apprehended approximately 30 minutes later. He has since been detained at Hall County Jail, facing charges that include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and robbery.

In a social media update, the Nebraska State Patrol commended the collaboration between troopers and county deputies in swiftly locating and arresting the suspect, expressing solidarity with the victims and their loved ones during this harrowing time.
